C21 Communications, solution provider and exclusive distributor of Topex products in the UK, is pleased to announce the availability of the first Topex compact VoIP gateway including Asterisk based IP PBX functions.
The European telecommunication equipment provider, TOPEX recently announced that the Asterisk version 1.4.0-beta 2 is successfully implemented on its VoIP
mG. TOPEX miniGateway with Asterisk is a compact VoIP gateway addressed to small and medium businesses (SMBs) having a large number of international calls.
This offer is most compelling for business users looking for easy customizable open source solutions. Asterisk is the most popular and extensible open source telephone system in the world, offering flexibility, functionality and features not available in proprietary business systems. Asterisk is a complete IP PBX (private branch exchange) for businesses, and can be downloaded for free. Asterisk can operate with almost all telephony equipments.

TOPEX miniGateway is built around the Mindspeed 82820 convergence processor featuring 60 VoIP channels, 2E1 trunks with ISDN-PRI signaling. The bridging and conference was modified to use processor's DSP facilities thus freeing the host processor from processing software codecs and media traffic. This makes it suitable for applications like IP PBX, Call Center, IVR, Voice Mail or upgrades of non IP PBXs to VoIP.
The presence of the Asterisk software in the TOPEX gateway gives users the possibility to easily configure the gateway via a Graphical Interface (GUI), available on the World Wide Web, in order to customize it accordingly to their needs.
Latest global study by Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc. shows that most SMBs companies will move to VoIP over the next five years—creating a huge opportunity for equipment vendors, service providers, and VARs. According to AMI estimates, the global SMB market for VoIP solutions was worth about US$3.26 billion in all of 2006, up 26% over 2005. Many small businesses (1-99 employees) generally seek simple voice-only solutions, while most medium businesses (100-999 employees) want sophisticated unified communications.
