C21 Communications, solution provider and exclusive distributor of TOPEX products in the UK, sees strong softswitch demand in the UK from service providers upgrading TDM networks. Also start-up service providers are choosing the low capacity media gateways with build in softswitch capability.
David Quirk, CEO of C21, said: “Waiting for the long touted IMS is not an option for service providers under the pressure of a fast changing market environment. It is our focus to deliver the right VoIP solutions that best fit our customers’ needs, including Next Generation Network equipment like softswitches and media gateways. ”.
According to a recent study from Heavy Reading the anticipated migration of network operators to services based on IMS isn't likely to include VoIP service in the foreseeable future, which means demand for softswitches isn't likely to drop off until the beginning of the next decade.

sales will continue to grow as carriers migrate TDM traffic to VoIP for the next five years and beyond. More than 50 percent of the service providers surveyed for this report do not expect their networks to be more than 75 percent VoIP until 2009; another 25 percent of those surveyed do not expect to reach that point until 2011.
Softswitch sales are expected to continue along with IMS sales for at least the next five years. Only 6 percent of the service providers surveyed expect to stop deploying softswitches in favour of IMS by 2007, and it is not until after 2010 that more than 50 percent of those surveyed expect to discontinue softswitch purchases in favour of IMS. While more than 30 percent are unsure of their company's IMS plans today, another 15 percent said they don't expect their company to make a complete shift to IMS.

Not all carriers are convinced that they need to implement IMS, and of those implementing IMS, many will do so alongside their VoIP networks. In Heavy Reading's carrier interviews, other than incumbents with both fixed and wireless assets, most did not see the immediate need to implement IMS, while some questioned whether they needed a full IMS solution at all. More than half of survey respondents said they expect softswitches to coexist with IMS in their company's network.
While carriers may not be convinced that they need IMS, they want to know their technology provider has a solid IMS migration story and transition plan. No one wants to get caught on the wrong track, and the carriers we talked to have a similar view regarding IMS. Most carriers expect their softswitch vendor to have a well-designed IMS migration path that they may implement at a later date, if they choose to do so.
