Commands for command line programs


Some useful and essential commands for FTP, and Telnet are listed here to help you along if you dont already have the luxury of WSFTP or CUTE FTP

ftp commands

user if you happen to get the username or password wrong

dir to change directories

ls -l to list remote directory contents.

put to transfer files to the remote computer e.g. put index.html

get to download the files to your computer

ASCII set transfer type to ascii (for text files, HTML)

BIN sets transfer type to Binary for images.

bye to exit your ftp connections


Telnet commands

quit is always handy, that gets you out of the telnet session.

dir to list the directory contents

ls -l on Unix systems for the dir equivalent.

display may also be useful; it shows you what some of your settings are, such as the erase character.

open will let you type in the name of the host you are trying to reach.

help will give you a list of commands that you can type.

close will let you close one telnet session and return to the telnet> prompt, so you can start another.

set lets you change the parameters that are shown when you type display. This can be useful if you like a specific command for your erase character or your escape character.
