If you're worried about your heating costs, there are several steps that you can take in order to reduce the amount of money you spend on your heating each winter. The first thing that you need to realize is that the biggest reason your heating costs are so high is that you're actually wasting a lot of the heat that you do pay for. Therefore, if you can improve the insulation in your home, you'll be able to cut down on your heating bills and save a lot of money each winter.

The biggest places that you will lose heat due to bad insulation are through your windows and through any cracks between your outside doors and the door frames. These are also easy things to fix! The first thing that you should do is make sure that there are not any cracks that air can get through. Once you fill those cracks, you'll be able to block the cold air from outside. In order to do this, you just need to purchase some weather strips from any hardware store – these strips of foam will fit just under your door or between your door and the wall.

As far as windows go, make sure that they close properly before you take any further steps. If they don't, you'll need to either make adjustments so that they do, or you'll have to purchase new windows. After that, you should make sure that they are not single paned windows. If they are single-pane windows, you should consider changing your windows to a newer type. The reason for this is that heat is lost very quickly through glass, but the small space of air between the two panes will serve as an extra insulator to keep more heat in your home.

You should also consider only heating the rooms that you will be spending a lot of time in – if you have a basement that is rarely used, for instance, you should think about shutting off the heaters in that part of the house.

Finally, the best way to avoid spending too much on heating is to wear layers more often even when you are indoors, and let the temperature stay a little bit lower than it would ordinarily.
