There was a report about a young lady who had everything going for her in life. She was well-like, outgoing, attractive, and was modeling in her spare time as she prepared to leave home for the first time. There was a full scholarship offered to her at a prestigious college.
Driving home one beautiful afternoon she noticed that the guy in the passenger seat of the car next to her was waving frantically. She rolled down the window but could not understand what he was saying, but this guy and his friend kept pointing to the front tire of her car.
She never thought this was a trap. She was cruising through life happy and feeling safe in the community. Never thinking that something bad would happen--unfortunately, hindsight is everything!
This young lady was getting ready to make the biggest mistake of her life. Unfortunately, she believed the two strangers in the car signaling her to stop because she had tire problems were being helpful. It was a tragic mistake that led her to an unspeakable fate.
She pulled over onto the side of road as the other car pulled in front of her to offer assistance. But, they were not there to help her because there was nothing wrong with her tire. The man that was in the passenger seat hit her hard in the head and she was knocked unconscious. When she came to, she had been taken to an isolated place where the men raped, sodomized, and tortured her over and over and over again.
But she was one of the lucky ones. You are now wondering how was she lucky? What is lucky about being kidnapped, raped, sodomized and tortured? Well, she was alivefor some reason they did not kill her. Very unusual for this type of crime, usually the victims are killed and their bodies dumped where they, hopefully, will never be found.
So, in one sense, she is lucky to be alive. But, it will take time for her to physically recover from her attack, but the mental anguish will always be there and she is headed for years of counseling. A promising life dashed all because of one mistaketrusting strangers. And, while physically alive, something inside of her died that day. She is no longer outgoing and friendlyshe lives in a world of fear and can not cope in the real world.
How many other people out there are like her? Do you think that nothing is ever going to happen to you either? Was there a way she could have protected herselfeven if she had stopped the car? Maybe there was, but hindsight is everything.
Even if she had been holding a small can of pepper spray it might have helped her stop what was going to happen when they attached. It might have given her just a few extra seconds to slow them down and to get back into the car and lock the doors.
So what should she have done? To begin with, she should not have stopped the carjust waved back and kept driving to a gas station or convenience store where she could have checked the tire with other people around. She was an opportunity for these men and they manipulated her innocence and trusting nature. She was helpless and defenseless because she stopped in an isolated area without considering her own safety for one moment.
Today violence is everywhere and no one is immune to it. Even a 100+ year old woman was beat and robbedall seen on video tape. People working in convenience stores are robbed and beat every day. Unfortunately, we all seem to be acknowledging and accepting of this as part of our culture.
What most people do not seem to understand is that they need to be prepared for anything that may happen. A small can of pepper spray may make the difference between living and dying the next time something unexpected happens.
Think about itI am sure that this young lady does--every single day.
