To most people the benefits of home insurance are obvious. Contents insurance will cover your furniture, clothes, electronic equipment and other prized possessions while buildings insurance will cover damage caused to your property, from fire and flood damage to vandalism and third party damage.

Of course when you are looking for a home insurance policy you will want to save money. However it is important to remember that the cheapest house insurance may not necessarily be the best. It is vital that you check all the elements of your policy to ensure you are suitably covered.

One such area that is vital to check is whether or not your home insurance offers alternative accommodation in the event your home becomes uninhabitable or needs to be rebuilt following extensive damage. If you take out a home insurance policy without alternative accommodation cover you could be left facing hefty hotel or rental costs if you are forced to leave your property for a sustained period of time.

Simply finding a policy that offers this feature is not enough. The type of accommodation cover offered will vary from one insurance company to the next. Some house insurance companies only pay towards alternative accommodation for a finite length of time while others will only cover your accommodation costs in a limited number of circumstances. In addition to these factors you also need to know how much money you will receive for your accommodation costs or what accommodation will be made available to you; will you be able to place you and your family in a clean, safe environment?

Knowing your home insurance will cover any rebuilding costs can provide great peace of mind. However having no access to suitable accommodation for you and your family during this period can be a very stressful time. When taking out your home insurance policy always remember to check that suitable accommodation cover is available in all the appropriate circumstances. A small increase in your home insurance premium can help to avoid a potentially traumatic experience.
