As the Walkman phones from Sony Ericsson rapidly climbed the popularity charts, it was natural for the global leader Nokia to strike back with their own version of music phones. Nokia's announcement of music centric, XperssMusic line up of mobile phones was widely anticipated. Though many pre-existing handset models like Nokia 3250 or N series Music edition, were included in the newly launched musical family, the Nokia 5300 is one of the handset that was solely designed and marketed as a specialized music solution for the XpressMusic line up.

The sliding mechanism and overall design of the Nokia 5300 resembles the Nokia 6111, though the Nokia 5300 looks a lot more youthful with its distinguishing white strips. The handset is currently available in two colour schemes – racy red and a more subtle dark grey, white being common in both of them. The device feels very compact and comfortable at 106.5 grams and gives an impression to withstand hard wear.

The Nokia 5300 's position as a music phone can be justified by its dedicated set of media keys, a multi format compatible media player and wireless headset support. Even the 3.5 mm jack adopter used in the Nokia 5300 is a boon for music lovers who want to enjoy their music without the inconvenience of ear-plug type headsets. The handset's internal memory of 5 Mb is next to nothing in terms of a music phone, so a standard Nokia 5300 kit is shipped with an external memory card which is expandable up to 2GB.

A 1.3 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and an easily accessible camera key is included in the Nokia 5300 for you to shoot anything unexpected instantly. You may opt to record high quality footage for a better narration of events. Other than triband GSM support for voice functions, the Nokia 5300 includes the latest in mobile Internet technology including EDGE, GPRS (class 10) and HSDSC. Email, chat or browse – with the Nokia 5300 there is always a way to remain connected.
