MALLORCA PROPERTY

For many years a favourite with seekers of sand, sea and fun, Mallorca, (or Majorca as it is otherwise known), has always been pretty easy to get to for most Europeans, and one of the always popular holiday destinations. However many people like it so much they decide to stay and actually buy Mallorca property to retire or to live in during all, or some, of the year. There is a big choice.

Whilst since the 1960’s Majorca has been famous for its areas of mass tourism, starting with the first package tours, much of the island has remained unspoiled and it is easy to get away from the busy spots, like in most Mediterranean islands in fact. Flights to and from Palma are not only frequent, but also often start from one of the many local airports springing-up around Europe. With many airports only an hour from home, a weekend in the mediterranean is a distinctly easy thing to have nowadays.

Mallorca has therefore grown with this vast influx (from 600,000 in 1960 to over 20 million now) of tourists every year, whilst managing to retain its ‘Spanishness’, with constant reminders of local heritage apparent all over the island. The more inland you go the quieter it is and the cheaper the house prices are, distance from the beach being an all important factor, from both the cultural and the maritime point of view. In other words it’s more Spanish but it’s a bit of a pain to get to the beach and back. Indeed towards the centre of the island and in the northern, more rugged parts, the prices of Mallorcan property are similar to Spanish mainland prices.

There is an amazing variety of Mallorcan property
available in terms of both location and type. You can buy anything between a studio or apartment either in town or by the sea, or even both, to an elegant villa set above the beautiful mediterranean waters with your own land surrounding you and a swimming pool or two. Private landing strips for your plane or helicopter accompany some of these, whilst on the more economical side you could look at lovely old townhouses or brand new developments.

Whilst Palma itself, as a city port, yacht harbour and commercial and government centre, is popular with many ex-pat residents, the resorts start just down the coast and it is possible for you to be at the concerts, nightclubs and bars in Palma in the evening whilst living by the sea as well. The top end of the Mallorca property market can be seen in and around Palma, although it is also very possible to buy an affordable home- from- home or permanent residence anywhere on the island.

The most popular seaside resorts and tourist areas retain their attraction in terms of both popularity and real estate value, both on the east and west coasts, and Mallorca property
prices are likely to compete well in the mediterranean property market, both near the coast and inland due to the everlasting charm of the island and its inhabitants.
