Every internet marketer needs to build a responsive list to succeed. This has been the case for as long as we have used the Internet as a marketing tool. Having an optin list allows you to immediately contact customers when new products are available

There are many ways to build an opt-in list, but there are also many mistakes made along the way. Here are four critical mistakes that are made by many, and how to avoid them.

1. Quality over Quantity
Failure to see this will cause disaster to infect your emails. Read it again “Quality over Quantity” Having a big list is great, unless it's totally unresponsive. Do you remember any teachers in school? Only a few right! Be a teacher to your list and they will respond. Act like a salesman and watch them walk away. When you build your list, remember that the number of list members you have isn't nearly as important as their interest in your topic. If you find a list of 100 buyers who buy from you regularly you will have greater profits than someone with a list of 10,000 that have no idea why they are even on the list.

2. Relationships
Failure to build a “Good” relationship with your list. Building a list is one thing, using it to your advantage is something else. You've got to keep in touch with the personal side of your list. Weekly mailings are a good general rule.
Twice weekly mailings are better to keep the list engaged in your information.
Daily mailings are good, but you don't want to go overboard. Relationship building goes a little further in that you must answer emails from your list, and the email you send to them needs to be from a personal viewpoint. Try sending to many ad type emails and you’ll start seeing a decline in your list. Placing a plug for a product, while writing about a topic is a great way to avoid the impression that it is an ad.

Speak “to” your list and not “at” them.

4. Autoresponders
The number 1 reason for list failure is the failure to use a top-of-the-line autoresponder. This is another huge mistake that people make. Autoresponders of poor quality don't deliver as well as they should. Many are automatically blocked by spam filters - regardless of what words are used in your message.
Many don't send the emails out in a timely manner. Many malfunction and send multiple emails (identical) out to each person on the list. Watch your email for the annoying mistakes that others make and learn from them. Avoid these problems by starting with a quality autoresponder from the very beginning. Your opt-in list will thank you for it.

3. Take Advantage of Opportunities

Failure to take advantage of the many list building opportunities these days will only slow the process to building a healthy responsive opt-in list. It can be done in a matter of a few weeks. Take advantage of the new techniques that are surfacing. Get involved in joint venture giveaways. Start doing some social networking. Use social bookmarks. Build your list in every way possible. Take Action
