Overview

Ceramic tiles are manufactured from a number of raw materials including sand, clay and glass substances. The materials are mixed with water and then heated to extreme temperatures to create the beautiful tiles we see in the shops today.

Porcelain tiles are highly resistant and durable tiles that don’t absorb any water. In the past they were mostly used by companies due to the fact that they can cope with a lot of wear and tear.

Daily Maintenance

Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend daily maintenance of glazed ceramic tiles even if it means just running a damp mop across the floor. Occasionally a more thorough cleaning effort is required, involving mopping the floor with a mix of detergent and water. When cleaning with detergent afterwards to remove any remnants. If the tiles are not glazed then Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend gently cleaning the floor with a mild scouring powder. This is an abrasive cleaner that may scratch if applied to a glazed surface.

If you’re cleaning tiles and grout in the bathroom then there’s bound to be a build-up of soap and other types of solutions and gels. The best way to approach this task is to add 2 tablespoons of rottenstone and 1 cup of hot water to a basin, and then using a sponge/cloth wipe the scum off. This mixture once applied should remove much of the scum. If you still find some stubborn marks then try cleaning the areas with a solution of tri sodium phosphate (2 tablespoons) and a gallon of hot water. After cleaning the surface with these mixtures make sure you give the tiles a thorough rinse to remove anything that’s left behind.

Mildew

Mildew is a mould growth that usually appears in a warm, humid environment. Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend dealing with both the symptoms and the cause of the mildew when addressing this problem. Dealing with the cause of the mildew may take the form of removing the source of the moisture, ventilating the area or drying the air.

The symptoms of mildew are a discoloration of the tile and/or grout and sometimes a musty smell. Mildew can be easily removed by applying a solution of chlorine bleach and water (1 part bleach - 4 parts water) to the affected area. After applying the solution, Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend rinsing and drying the area as soon as possible.

Cleaning Grout

As most types of grout are porous, it’s likely that whatever stains appear on the grout will have penetrated the grouts pores. This means that simply wiping the surface of the grout may not be enough.

White grout can usually be cleaned by mixing a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water in a ratio of 1:1. Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend applying the solution to the grout and then leaving it for 15 minutes before removing. This solution should never be applied to colored grout as it may discolour the surface. In order to clean colored grout try applying use shaving foam. Phoenix Tile and Grout Cleaning recommend applying the shaving foam to an inconspicuous section to test it before applying it liberally to the other areas.
