Jack Bauer’s sixth day exploits have ended but his adventures are far from over. FOX Broadcasting Network has announced that its hit action series has already been renewed for at least another two seasons. Kiefer Sutherland who plays the near-invincible Jack Bauer-of-all-trades in the multi-awarded show, has reportedly signed close to a whopping $40 Million contract to stay on as executive producer and star until 2009.
The recently-concluded sixth season has been widely considered as the weakest in the franchise history so far. As early as its first half, viewers had noticed the decline in plot cohesion and the relative dullness of the pace. Show writers did admit they had greater difficulty writing the storylines for Day 6 than previous seasons. While both the action and story picked up midway through the season, it still lacked the fire and suspense of season five, considered by many as the best Jack Bauer day to date.
Apart from Days 7 and 8, the show has also been tapped for the big screen although plans have been temporarily been put on hold. 24 reinvented television programming when it debuted in 2001 with its real time format. It has reaped nearly 40 awards and been nominated for over a hundred. The series has been a consistent favorite although the just-concluded season six has had the lowest share of audience ratings.
Show execs and writers have hinted at major changes for the upcoming season in an effort to redeem the show and restore it to its original spunk and solidity. Among the changes reportedly considered is the move to a set outside the Los Angeles home it has known. This will be the first major location change for the series although minor set changes have been made through the years. They had previously altered the interior of the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) office but the episodes essentially all still took place in Los Angeles.
