The search for meaning in life usually comes from the thought that there must be more to life then just “this” state of existence. By “this” state of existence, I’m referring to the point in time when a person desires more joy, happiness, laughter and all the good things in their life, and less of the fear, pain and struggle that comes with trying to get along in life.

A Simple Question that Starts the Journey

Sooner or later, it’s a question that a person on the journey of life asks. Sometimes in open, sometimes in the privacy of their own minds, but almost inevitably, it is a question that is asked. It doesn’t really matter how they came to ask it. The question could have come to them in the darkest moments of their life, it could have been triggered off in a casual conversation, it could even be a result of reading an article or book that talks about life in its many faceted aspects.

The question about the meaning of life is the trigger point and entry into the state of increasing conscious awareness. It starts the journey to the realization that man is more than just a physical body. There is an intangible, immaterial aspect to the “life” of a human being that can’t be seen, touched or known except indirectly through the results of their thoughts, words and actions.

Perhaps it’s the prompting of your soul within you that is trying to awaken you. Perhaps it’s the birthing of the human soul into full consciousness, where you finally gain the ability to start deliberately and consciously expressing yourself through your human form.

The Journey of The Butterfly

It may be like the journey of the butterfly. When it first enters the physical world, it is no more than an egg, much like the human egg that is nestled within the womb of a woman. And when the baby is born, it is like the caterpillar that breaks out and begins its independent journey in the physical world.

Much like a human child, the initial years are feeding, learning and growing to become a full sized caterpillar. The next stage of life for a caterpillar would then be enter the stage of a chrysalis, before breaking out of the chrysalis into a bright, incredibly beautiful butterfly.

The search for the meaning of life is the point of a person’s life where they start to enter the stage of a chrysalis. It’s a time when they start searching inwards for meaning, direction and purpose. In a way, it’s like withdrawing themselves from the outer world and moving into the exploration of the inner world. Much like the way the caterpillar starts to build a chrysalis shell around itself as it prepares itself for the next stage of its life.

The time when the butterfly breaks out of the chrysalis is similar to that of the birthing of conscious awareness in a person. The journey to develop consciousness is a simple road, but not an easy one. It’s the realization that one is more than just a physical body, that we have an inner being called a soul. More than just being aware that we have a soul, is the realization that we ARE the soul, and the physical body is but a suit for the soul.

It is a struggle to break free of the bonds of the previous existence of a caterpillar, out of the comfort zone of the cocoon of a chrysalis. Some make it through, and some do not, preferring instead the warm comfort zone within the shell of the former life. For those that make it, the true journey of life is only beginning.

Realization of Our Life Purpose

When we come to the knowledge about the purpose of our life, and that our purpose is to realize the fullness of our potential, ability and power, it’s like the breaking out of the cocoon into the sunlight of life. And that’s when we realize that life is truly just about our becoming the highest, grandest and most amazingly beautiful version of who we are.

The meaning and purpose of our life is then to experience the joy that comes with the use of our talents and abilities. It comes with the freedom to express our highest self in our thoughts, words and actions in a manner that creates more life not just for ourselves, but in the lives of others.

Meaning comes when we lift up those who desire to be better, it comes when we express our talents in the creation of a beautiful picture, it comes when we use our god-given gifts to improve the lives of others in one way or other through the products and services we create. It could come even in a simple smile, when you see how another soul brightens up and smiles back at you.

It may be as simple as the invention of the wheel, or the painting of a picture. It could even be the writing of a book or in the complexity of creating a better computer.

The meaning of life comes when we realize Who we truly are, and move to become the highest, grandest vision of that which we are. It’s about the journey of becoming, and the simple journey of a human “being”.
