First, know what kind of Blu-ray technology you have. If you own a Blu-ray player, you’ll simply need pre-recorded Blu-ray discs such as movies. If you own a Blu-ray recorder, you’ll have a few more choices but don’t worry, they’re similar to your CD and DVD burning choices.
JVC offers a BD/DVD hybrid disc that serves as a transitional media for those of you wanting both DVD and BD functionality. This disc plays in both DVD as well as Blu-ray players. At its heart, it’s a single layer Blu-ray disc (BD) with 25 GB of capacity. Because the Blu-ray layer is transparent to the DVD’s red laser beam, a standard dual layer DVD-ROM is also held on the same disc. This means that not only can you watch the high definition movie on a Blu-ray player, you can take that same disc and play it on a standard DVD player. This is useful if you want to be able to view HD content at home on your Blu-ray disc player as well as take the disc and play it elsewhere, perhaps in your DVD-equipped car.
If you own a Blu-ray recorder, your Blu-ray media options are BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE. BD-ROMs are like CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs – pre-recorded content, movies, or software. BD-Rs – think CD-Rs – except for with up to 50 gigabytes of storage space. These Blu-ray discs allow for recording your data or movies one time. BD-RE is the rewritable format of Blu-ray technology. You can erase your Blu-ray data and use the disc again. Told you, it’s not hard. Pick the Blu-ray media that’s best for your needs.
