If youre a college or pre college student, please dont believe for one second that loans are the only form of college financing! If you need financial aid there are more suitable ways of getting it than applying for a loan. Loans are burdensome to repay because of the ever-increasing interest that comes with them. Rather than take out a loan, try a scholarship or grant instead!

The great thing about scholarships and grants is that they are free. However, it does take a bit of time and energy to figure out where to get one.

Scholarships: Several businesses and organizations like the Lions Club, Optimist, Chamber of Commerce and the Girls & Boys Club provide scholarships to college students. You can apply for military, church, and union scholarships as well.

The internet is great resource for finding scholarships. Simply search for scholarships on your favorite search engine. Or check out Scholarships.com. This site can help you find scholarships that fit you and your interests!

The majority of the scholarships you find will require an essay to be written. Do not worry about this and definitely dont quit! Look for one that matches you and then sit down and start typing. Before sending it in, make sure that you have a friend edit it.

You may also want to check the college you are applying for. Oftentimes they will award scholarships to those with high GPAs or ACT scores. They typically give out scholarships for athletic abilities as well.

If you are still in high school, ask the Financial Aid office about scholarships. Asking your counselor is also a great idea since he or she will know know your needs better.

The most important thing to do is to start immediately. Look for scholarships and ask people you know if they are aware of any.

Grants, just like scholarships, are free. They are given depending on the financial need, race, association, or special interest of the student. You can apply for grants through private groups, educational institutions, and the federal government.

Federal government grants are given based solely on on the students income. Applications can be found at FAFSA.com or you can pick up an application from your financial aid office. Depending on the method you used to apply, your Student Aid Report will be sent to you in about three to six weeks.
