But the third largest island in the Mediterranean has SO much more to offer.
And if you are an outdoor enthusiast, Cyprus is PURE paradise.
Just imagine.
All this and much more can be found in Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean. Yet the vast majority of visitors to the island still see Cyprus as just a summer sun destination and many never leave their resort to discover
the outdoor paradise that lies within.
If you are an outdoor lover whether walker, cyclist, watersports enthusiast or just a plain lover of nature, then head for the far west of the island, where even the coastline remains unspoilt by modern development. Base yourself near the town of Polis on the north west of the island and immerse yourself in the pine forest nearby or explore the beauty of the wild and rugged Akamas peninsula. Here you can indulge in the thrill of mountain biking or hike the many trails on the peninsula.
And when you are done with the forest and the Akamas, there are countless, gorgeous valleys to explore, many with dams nestling at the foot of the valley. And where there’s a dam, there’s a watercourse and that means lots of streams and many rivers to cross…though by late Summer many are bone dry. Our favourite streams are those that run under the many venetian bridges on the island. They start in the Troodos mountain area and there is a fantastic route through the Troodos forest which takes in all the bridges.
Of course, being in the great outdoors comes with it’s eating pleasures and what better way to finish off a hike or bike in the forest than with a lazy, late taverna lunch in one the many mountain villages. Or take a picnic and find your own private corner of this magical island – your very own secret Cyprus.
