My first child - A fathers story

Sometimes we wander through life without knowing why we are here and why we do the things we do. I remember being a single man with just myself to think about, it was only 5 short years ago. I was that wanderer, desiring plenty but happy with pleasing myself.

Of course the inevitable happened like so many people that desire plenty, I found the love of my life and my life moved from being the wanderer to something.. well a little more domestic and unselfish. Before I knew it, I was a happily married man and on my way to being a father.

Two years later, my wife Amanda and I became blessed with our first child, a boy called Ben. I will never forget the moment Ben was pushed and pulled into this world by our very professional midwife. Only a father will know this feeling, it almost feels like a dream where every emotion from happiness through to a sense of surreal bemusement overcomes you. It isn’t long before the weight of responsibility is felt and so begins the life of a father.

Gone is the selfish past of single life where fun is all that matters, now I am faced with the weight of looking after a helpless baby, fending, protecting, providing and loving and you know what..? I wouldn’t change a single thing!
