Vertical blinds and horizontal blinds are very practical window coverings and are quite similar to each other. The difference is in the way they attach to the window although they can both be manually operated. They are a popular window decoration and they provide an effective way of presenting your window while achieving the privacy you desire.

Normally vertical blinds will have a rotating function that controls the amount of light allowed into a room. They attach to the frame of the window at both the top and bottom with a chain that secures their place and working order. However, the more expensive blinds feature weights on the bottom and have no need of chains.

Vertical blinds come in a wide variety of thicknesses and materials. Some are embossed with patterns, and a whole pallet of colors is available to chose from. The more block-out they provide, usually, the more expensive they will be. Some vertical blinds are very wide so you require fewer individual slats to cover the window, where others are narrower and the blind will have more slats.

Horizontals generally come with cords that are attached at the left or right side of the window. This feature enables you to turn a wooden or plastic rod that activates the cords to operate the slats to turn. These slats are positioned horizontally and are generally attached at the top of the window. You can open or close as you like, and filter the sun allowed through into your room.

Blinds are fantastic for kitchens and bathrooms, and any place in the home where you use water. Where curtains and fabric window coverings can be ruined and stained from splashing and steam, blinds are easy to wipe over and are often waterproof. Verticals can be easier to clean of the two types, and offer the added bonus of not holding the dust like horizontal blinds do.

Also, today there are electrical controlled blinds that you operate with a remote. This type has many safety features, which is great if you have kids and pets that can pull at the blinds and cords that are hanging. Normal slats can have sharp edges and spaces between each slat, which children could pop their little heads in and get stuck. It's important to consider the safety that vertical blinds may not provide in this regard, and also remember there are so many other forms of window coverings if blinds aren't suitable.

Opinions vary as to whether blinds are a practical and effective presentation of window treatments. Although with all the available window treatments of various textures and colors you should be able to find something that expresses your personal taste in home décor. There are some individuals preferring a more stylish appearance and are able to have them custom made to order. Although they are a bit more expensive, they do come in a wide range of choices. Window blinds are a prime choice for the office and offer a modern contemporary atmosphere.
