Go shopping for Utah auto or home owners insurance and you’ll likely get a wide variety of quotes. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that most
insurance agents add on several unnecessary (and unwanted) options to your insurance quote without telling you. The hope is that you’ll accept their quote with all the extras, not knowing that you’re paying more than needed, allowing the agent to make more money off you.
Some agents go so far as to add options on, even after being directly asked for a “bare minimum” quote. You may have even run into agents that will tell you that the options are required by law to try and convince you to accept the higher rate.
It’s unfortunate that in Utah, where trust levels run high, insurance agents so willingly take advantage of the community’s trusting nature to make a few extra dollars. There is a difference between providing excellent customer service by informing you of your options, and blatantly adding options without telling you it’s being done.
So how do you select an insurance agent that will take care of your interests instead of trying to wring you for every last cent?
Get multiple quotes
Getting quotes from multiple agents, especially from multiple agents representing the same insurance company, will be very telling in who is being honest with you, and who is trying to take you for a fool.
Ask for the minimum requirements in every case, and an honest agent’s quote should go something like, “Although this option is not required, we recommend it because [some really good reason here]. It will add $X.XX per month to the quote. Without it, you’ll save $X.XX.”
Getting quotes from two different Allstate agents, wherein you ask for minimum coverage, should result in quotes that are nearly identical. If they are not, somebody (or perhaps everybody) isn’t being upfront with you.
Ask Questions
After receiving a quote, ask the agent what the coverage includes. Ask the agent to go over everything, including the coverages that are required, having them indicate which ones are required and which ones are optional.
Make note of what you are told, then ask the same questions of each agent you’ve received a quote from. If you see one agent is not covering you for something that another agent is, ask them why that coverage wasn’t included. The same goes if you find that one tries to cover you for something that a previous one did not. Ask them why they included that coverage.
