For thousands of years traditional medicine has relied on the natural remedy to treat a wide range of ailments ranging from corns and calluses to the functioning of the brain and nervous system. It is well accepted that through correct and regular use the natural remedy is an obvious choice for the treatment of many conditions.

The list of potential remedies is enormous with each continent and country having its own particular list obviously initially centered around it’s own indigenous herbs and plants together with local illnesses and problems.

However trading of herbs and spices and has been important since man’s early days. This trade also promoted the exchange of natural remedies and medicines which in turn fueled the demand for the basic natural ingredients. So whether it was powdered Pomegranate peelings from Arabia (used to treat burns and infection on cuts and wounds) St Johns Wort used as an antidepressant as well as antibiotic and anti-viral agent; demand was increasing.


It is often thought that the herbs used to promote natural healing of the body and totally safe and free from side effects. This is most certainly not the case, so do not assume harmless just because it is a natural product! As with any drug or medication, herbs or plant extracts must be selected and administered by experienced herbalists and a large amount of common sense. You should not administer a stimulant or a herb that has stimulating properties just before bed time. Many herbs and extracts have more than one effect and it is important to take this into consideration during selection. Herbs can also react with each other or any prescription medications so it is essential that this information is provided when the selection is made.


The active ingredients of certain plants are used to make highly powerful and concentrated essential oils. Again there are many oils used to relieve or treat many ailments. Some are extremely volatile and will vapourise with the application of relatively low heat. These vapours can then be inhaled and depending on the ingredients will treat a wide range of problems. In general essential oils should be diluted with a base oil before application directly to the skin. Essential oils are powerful and should always be treated with respect and common sense.
