An Acura distributor consists of a rotating arm or rotor inside the Acura distributor cap. It is situated on top of the distributor shaft. The rotor's metal part is attached to the central high voltage cable from the coil through a spring-loaded carbon brush. The rotor arm's metallic part goes near to---but does not touch---the output contacts, connecting through high tension cables to the each cylinder's spark plug. As the rotor spins inside the distributor, electrical current hops over the small gaps created between the rotor arm and the contacts due to the high voltage created by the ignition coil.
Acura's sensitive distributor needs protection to keep it from getting damaged from the daily wear and tear. The
Acura Distributor Cap plays the role of guarding the distributor. Audi distributor caps are used to cover the distributor and its internal rotor. It contains one post for each cylinder. In multi-point ignition systems, there is a central post for the coil voltage coming into the distributor. In high-energy ignition systems, where there is no central post, the ignition coil is attached on top of the distributor. Inside the cap, each post has a corresponding terminal. These plug terminals are arranged around the circumference of the cap according to the firing order. Its purpose is to send the secondary voltage to the proper spark plug at the exactly the right time.
Acura Distributor Cap, despite its protective function, is itself, susceptible to heat and vibration. Distributor cap failure may be caused by carbon deposits and eroded metal terminals. In cases of broken distributor caps, replacement is highly recommended. Owners need not to worry, though, about the costs. A typical aftermarket distributor cap costs relatively little compared to other performance parts.
