The Morality of Murder and Funerary Practices

There are a lot of questions concerning murder that our society faces. Within our society there are contradictory opinions on such topics as abortion, death penalty and euthanasia. Many people view these to be murder, to others they are necessary in society. This demonstrates that even within our own society, there is a dispute between what is moral and what is immoral. Each moral absolute has an exception. This removes a possibility of Moral Absolutism, and confirms that there is no universal truth. Another reason I think in cultural relativism is because it is helpful in certain situations. It can help warn us about the results of thinking that our preferences are grounded on a certain standard. Most practices that we use are strange to us, and it is very easy to loose sight on that.

One instance of this is funeral practices. The Callatians, as Herodotus wrote, were men eating their fathers; it is a quite shocking idea, at least to our society. But couldn’t it be viewed as a sign of respect? Maybe these Callatians eat their father so that their fathers were always with them, as a part of them, so that their souls stayed with their sons. The Callatians thought so, but is it reasoning for such actions? As for our society, it would never permit this. We would consider it disgusting and morally wrong. It is connected with the fact that in our culture we have different customs; we either bury our relatives underground or cremate them after their death. On such a way of thinking, the custom to burry the dead can be viewed as an act of rejection, and cremation of the dead body as positively slighting. Anyone of us would feel an extreme aversion only thinking about eating human flesh.
