If you prefer current or modern, then this style is for you. Contemporary style covers a range of styles developed in the second half of the 20th century while the modern style is an architectural approach from the 1930s with origins from the German Bauhaus School of Design and Scandinavian modern design. Since they both emphasize geometric lines and shapes, they are discussed as one.

Although the common color for contemporary furniture is black, other colors include beige and white. Even though it’s been thought that the modern style is cold and modest, the current contemporary style is comfortable, inviting, and is equally suitable for homes and offices because of the texture, simple lines, and simplicity.

To achieve the look of a contemporary home, it's essential to bear some things in mind. The color palette includes bright and bold colors, with black often being used to ground and define a contemporary room. By painting the walls in a neutral color, it provides a fabulous backdrop for bold colored accessories.

The most distinctive element of a contemporary interior design is line. This is found in the use of bold colors, architectural details, high ceilings, exposed windows, and the geometric shapes of the wall art and sculptures. However, in contemporary design, less is more because the bare space on walls and between furniture pieces becomes as critical as the areas filled with objects since each piece stands out as unique.

In contemporary furniture, smooth, clean, geometric lines are essential for furniture pieces. Furniture that is upholstered is often black, white, or in other neutral colors that are textured natural fibers consisting of wool, cotton, linen, silk, or jute.

Furniture pieces should be simple without elaborate curves or ornate decoration. The sofas, chairs, and ottomans have visible legs, while the beds and chairs have no skirt or fringes.

Generally, floors are bare and smooth in a wood, vinyl, or tile material. If area rugs are used, plain or geometric patterns are a good choice to add color and texture.
