Have you ever been driving in the fast lane and realized you needed to slow down and change lanes? This can happen in real situations where you come face to face with having to take a different direction in life. It’s like you’re driving eighty miles an hour trying to reach your destination and suddenly you run into a detour. Now you’ve entered a road less traveled.

I am reminded of this very same feeling when I had to make a detour in my career, after being laid off twice. It was in those transitional times I had to slow down and get quiet. As I began to create visual images of what I wanted to be, how I wanted to live the rest of my life; I realized I had to travel through unknown territory that would require a BIG stretch for me.. And I was terrified. But the passion and desire for the vision had overtaken me and I knew I had to change lanes or be run over by my own fears, self-doubt and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change”.

-Charles Darwin, biologist

I see it everyday. Friends, clients, family members who are in careers where they feel trapped, don’t know where to turn next, or want to start a brand new one but it’s too scary. And at the top of the list: “ I better keep the job I have, it’s better than not having nothing”. Sound familiar? But here’s the caveat, “if you are looking for a deep sense of fulfillment in your job; you will not find it unless you unite work with who you are with what you do”. That means you must make a detour and change your course of action. In a nutshell, it’s about asking the questions, “why am I here” and “what can I contribute to the world”?. Studies have shown that more than 60% of people do not enjoy their work. Are you in that number?

Consider spending some time reflecting on your gifts, talents and how they might be intertwined with who you are. You were created for a purpose. Don’t miss this opportunity of self-reflection, it can be life-enhancing. You owe it to yourself and the people who will benefit from your gifts. So, slow down…..you just might have to change lanes!

Travel with care!
