In this day and age of information overload, when there is an explosive amount of information waiting to be availed of with just the click of a mouse, the daunting task of finding the right information in the least amount of time is made easier by Search Engines. Search Engine is the tool used to find or locate information or resources based on the use of keywords. The most commonly used Search Engine is the web search engine which retrieves information from the World Wide Web or the internet.

The task of finding data on any subject on the internet is a monumental one given the exhaustive amount of information available. Programs like Search Engines enable users to minimize their work and provide them the list of documents that matches their requirements the closest. It is a simple task of typing in keywords, phrases or Boolean logic for the information they are looking for in any of the more popular search engines like Google, Alta Vista etc. and find matches that meet their requirements the most.

Search Engines work through the system of storing, indexing and searching. They maintain a directory of websites and web-pages sourced from the World Wide Web using web-crawlers or automated web browsers. The web resources are then indexed using words from headings, titles or meta tags. Search engines return results closely matching the user's criteria based on this indexing.

Pages are indexed and ranked according to specific criterion and the most relevant pages are put first. It gives users the chance to determine whether the search results meet their needs and enables them to find the data they are searching for in minimum possible clicks. A simple design, user friendly interface, most number of relevant results returned are the few determinants that make a Search Engine popular.

Search Engines can be used to find any number of internet resources and multimedia including texts, images, audio, videos etc. Video search engines locate videos from all over the net hosted on sites, including the popular sites like You-Tube, My Space etc.

To conclude, Search Engine makes the work of browsing through the net or computer systems, looking for desired information, easier and quicker. Getting information ranging from data for a work project or simply the review of the latest movie is only as simple as typing in keywords in the Search Engines and hitting the enter button. Given the dynamic rate at which the internet is growing with more and more resources available over the net, the service provided by Search Engines is almost indispensable.
