Web site's navigation is designed to help visitors to get the information they want. If you have a large number of sections and web pages, the navigation plan must be properly researched and designed. You must have your navigation plan optimize the common steps they would take to find what they want on your site. For example, the steps required from searching a catalog of items, selecting items, adding to shopping cart, proceeding to check out, and entering payment must be facilitated by the navigation system. If you don't provide with a good navigation system, it could lead to frustration and the user may miss an important step and you will have an aborted sale.

The only thing that users need to know is where they are now, and how to go elsewhere. Navigation can be broken into two primary types, location indicators and navigation controls.

Location indicators will let users know their location in your site. You should realize that users coming from search engine could enter any page, not necessarily on a main page. They need to be able to orientate themselves. Location informations must appear on every page of the site, in the same place, and in the same style. It should tell the user precisely where they are and it must be clear from any user who has entered the site at an internal page.

Page banner, graphic, or naming the page will be sufficient. The page name should also appear in the main navigation so it is relevant within the overall structure of the site. You can also used a different color background, contrast color, or sidebar in each part of the site. The color change should be reflected in navigation. Using breadcrumbs on every page is a good idea. It will show you a series of hierarchical links that you have used to go from page to page.

Navigation controls are the main navigation links. They allow users to move around the site. It must be located in the same place, with the same appearance on each page. It must be clear, looks like navigation, leads to obvious content, consistent with other navigation controls, and predictable with the style and location.

Always keep end user in mind, remember that the websites should not be designed for their owners, they should be designed for their users.
