How would you like to have your own piece of the tropics growing in your home, garden or greenhouse. Why not have a go at growing that most useful of the bromeliads yourself, the Pineapple.

List of Needs

Top cut off section of a pineapple that includes the green leaves

Potting mix

Some extra sand or small gravel

Medium sized pot

Pot Saucer

Water

Directions

Leave the pineapple top out to dry for a few days or week.

Strip away the dried skin and lower few sets of leaves. Where around the base of the top you will notice the beginnings of some aerial roots beginning to form.

Mix potting mix and sand or gravel in a 2 --1 mix. Plant this up to the depth of the first leaves in a medium sized pot, with some moist potting mix. Adding sone sand, fine gravel or even some pine bark etc to the mix can be helpful. Because the pineapple is a bromeliad species. If far prefers a raised well drained position or even a hillside to grow in.

Water the potting mix in further to bed it down.

Put the pot in the saucer.

Place in a shady sheltered position.

Keep moist and over the next few months you should have a well potted pineapple plant to plant out in 6-12 months.
