During the preparation for the Lunar new year the most families set up the altars for the forefathers in most houses. This is the way to honour the memory of the ancestors. Beside, the people visit the graveyard to look after the ancestor’s graves and to decorate them. All members of family try to wear a new stylish clothes and to cook a lot of delicious dishes for the holiday party. The eve of new year is also a very pleasant and profitable time for the shop`s owners. During this days the thousands of people compete with each other at the markets and present shops. Everybody hopes to get the best buys and surprises for the family and friends. Although the prices are higher than in usual days, the shoppers don`t pay attention to it. The food during these preparation days is prepared in store to avoid the standing in the kitchen on the holidays. The new year day is commonly known as a family holiday and because of it all the members of the family try to gather together and to spend this night in a warm family atmosphere. The people who live far away from relatives come back home.


When the midnight approaches, all the people begin to count the moments and look on clocks. There is a traditional ritual in Vietnamese families to sing the fervent prayers in a calm voice at midnight. The people believe that the moments between two years has a miracle power and unusual things could happen.

New years Ewe is called Giao Thua and it is the main moment in the Tet holiday. By the ten o`clock people abandon the streets and wait for the miracles of night. But after the midnight everybody goes out and observe the lights of fireworks. It is believed that the noises bring the happiness and turn out the evil spirits.
