According to the Vietnamese zodiac calendar, every year has the symbol of animal. This year is the symbol of the Cock. There are a lot of beliefs and characteristics connected with the cock, in which the most of people believe. According to the calendar the people who was born in the cock year are talented in different fields, have analytic mind and are very capable. They like to be involved in many activities and are afraid to fail. The lunar new year is celebrated in many countries and people in these countries have many traditions related with this holiday. In Vietnam the most popular holiday is the Tet Nguyen-Dan, also known as the Lunar new year. It called usually just Tet and celebrated during three days after the first day of the lunar year.


The order of celebrating the Viatnamese New year is quite complicated and consists of several stages. The celebration begins with preparation for the Tet. The preparation take many days and efforts. Before the party the houses are repaired and painted, cleaned thoroughly and decorated with ornamentations, flowers, toys and peach or plum branches. This period is always filled with merry talks, nice impressions and wishes for love, peace, merry and happiness. Usually all the wishes are written on the beautiful bright postcards or on the red paper and located in visible places of the house.

Two days before the party begin the preparations for the Kitchen God`s tour to the heaven. The tradition demands to have a thanks dinner, which is given to Kitchen God. After this dinner preparations for the Tet continues with new wave and enthusiasm. The week before the new year holiday is called “Tat Nien”. In this period people in the villages decorate the houses with bamboo and different amulets to attract the spirit of dead relatives.
