India has had a very long tradition of making exclusive leather footwear. Among them the most famous and exclusive are the Mojaris or Kolhapris. With their origin dating back to the times of the Mughal kings and queens, at that time the embroidery on these 'Juttis' were done with real threads made of gold and silver and were ornamented with precious stones and pearls. However with the passage of time the silver and gold threads were replaced by artificial silk threads and beads and bells are now used to embellish them. Made from the leather obtained by the leather buffaloes or camels, these 'Mojaris' or 'Kolhapuris' are congenital to the state of Rajasthan, Karnataka and Punjab. As these shoes are products of time immemorial and is produced by individual artisans, the designs of each pair varies accordingly. Roaming on the old markets and roads of Jaipur and Jaisalmer one can actually see the production of these footwear. In the narrow lanes of the cities of Rajasthan one can see individuals indulged in crafting these miniatures of creation even in the flickers of candlelight. Very popular in northern India these 'Juttis' are métier with intricate motifs that will remind you of the royal patrimony of these shoes that were once endemic only to the kings and the queens.




Made as a slip on style these footwear were once worn only on festive occasions and that too on traditional dresses like the kurta and churidaar. However, this trend is changing and nowadays girls in western clothes are too found wearing them. With changing trends new designs blended with the traditional style are upcoming.
