Perhaps one of the worst things you could do if you've begun to experience spontaneous attacks of anxiety (often called Panic Attacks) is to delay treatment from a qualified caregiver. While it is possible to cope with this condition on your own, most likely you're going to experience poorer quality of life issues. What's more, attempting to take care of the symptoms of anxiety through fad cures will only exacerbate the problem for you.
Anxiety management follows a logical care path as well as crisis intervention if necessary. It begins with an evaluation by your family physician. This will rule out existing conditions contributing to your attacks or identify a health problem that, when diagnosed and treated will eliminate your anxiety. Therapy, training in relaxation (bio-feedback) and the development of a support system made up of family and friends will allow you to deal with incipient anxiety attacks on an emotional level.
Because many of the medications used to treat anxiety attacks require time to "build up" in your body, you may need to discuss crisis management with your doctor during the interim. This may require mild sedatives depending upon the severity of the attacks, but in all cases, this must be monitored closely by qualified medical personnel.
Changes in lifestyle may also be a factor to reducing the frequency and severity of the attacks. A healthy, well balanced diet, routine exercise and limiting the use of caffeine and alcohol will not only help control anxiety, but will help you to get into shape and generally feel better overall. Most importantly, as you facilitate these changes, be certain to discuss them openly with your primary caregiver so that he or she may monitor your progress and hopefully identify specific triggers for your panic.
You also need to understand that you're not alone; throughout history, many famous individuals diagnosed with various anxiety disorders continued to lead incredibly productive lives. Artists, entertainers, even world leaders have suffered in exactly the same way you have. So there is a precedent for you in that these types of disorders do not need to become a barrier in your pursuit of your goals.
When you've reached a point where the condition is under control, it's also important to remember that it is not necessarily cured. You need to continue to work closely with your doctor, taking medications as prescribed and of course maintaining that healthy lifestyle! While it's true that even with qualified treatment, your anxiety attacks may never be cured; it will allow you to live a normal and satisfying life through proper management.
