Anyone who has had their eyes open in the last decade can see the property destruction young taggers have had on their communities. "Graffiti artists" seem to specialize in getting their message across by destroying other people's property and in the process marring the views of passing motorists and pedestrians.
There is the obvious cost in destruction. Then the hidden cost of repair/elimination of the grafitti. It happens in all social spectrums all across the country. A lot of it is gang related. It usually happens in the early morning hours when taggers can go about their "work" in peace and quiet.
At least one city has had enough. Denver Colorado. Recently Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Police Chief Gerry Whitman and Councilwoman Judy Montero unveiled a new plan to catch the crooks in the act with some "graffiti cams."
The wireless hidden spy cameras will be camouflaged and portable and located in so- called 'hot spots'-areas that have a history of repeat graffiti. The cameras will be activated by graffiti-related motion and will send images of the activity to police cell phones and e-mail accounts.
The idea of course is to catch the perps and impose some pretty hefty fines that would help pay for the damage. Community service is in the offing as well under the new laws.
Graffiti removal is very expensive and time consuming on city resources that are already stretched very thin.
This is just another creative use of the up and coming best tool in the fight against crime-hidden spy cameras. They are versatile, flexible, disguisable and affordable not only for municipalities but individuals as well. They have all sorts of applications both for business and homeowners alike.
So the next time you see some graffiti in your home town look around and smile you may be on hidden spy camera.
