There are a number of considerations to make when choosing the right nursing home for you. Starting with basic, practical matters, you will need to decide on a geographic location. This should be a location that you like, as well as one that is accessible for other family members to be able to come visit you. Perhaps you will want to stay close to the area you have lived, return to a favorite city, move closer to relatives, or experience a warmer climate. These are all valid factors to think about in order to make sure you are happy and comfortable in a nursing home.
Another major factor is how you will be paying for your accommodation, as there are homes that require private payment, and others that accept state funding. There is nothing wrong with either option; it just depends on what you can afford. If you have not planned ahead for the possibility of requiring nursing home care chances are you will require financial assistance. If this is the case, make sure you choose a home that accepts state funding before you move in, even if you will be using other payment options initially.
Next, what is the actual nursing home facility like? Do you see yourself feeling at home there? Are the surroundings pleasant? What kind of amenities does it offer? Like other times in your life when you have chosen places to live, you should try to find a nursing home environment that appeals to you. You are choosing a home, and the nursing services offered are only one part of the whole.
When you have some ideas of places that interest you, spend some time reading their literature, and visiting them, perhaps for a meal or other activity if this is an option. In this way you will get a better feel for the day-to-day atmosphere of the place, and hopefully get to meet some of the other residents. A personal reference is a valuable source of information.
Get feedback from other family members or other people you trust, but remember the most important opinion is your own. The decision to move into a nursing home is one that will affect your entire family, but the primary consideration is your health, happiness and well-being. You are the best judge of what your needs are, so try to be clear about stating them, and taking the necessary steps to get them met. Try not to compromise too much in the interest of pleasing others. Without active participation in determining the course of their daily lives, it is easy for the elderly to succumb to depression and feeling a loss of control. Do everything possible to ensure that your life continues to be fulfilling and meaningful, and make the most of your new circumstances.
