How to Move with Kids – Getting Settled – section 1
The moving process is almost over. You have arrived at your new home and now all that is left is to get settled in. You are most likely feeling very excited and close to being relieved, however, your children may feel that this is a hard experience or perhaps a simple one. It is important, as a parent, to be very aware of their feelings.
Be sure that you are actually ready to settle in, and keep in mind that you will need to think about what your children may need to get settled in. Be ready to deal with issues they may have as you finally get to your new home.
It is also important to try and make your kids feel right at home from the moment you open the door. It is easier for children to feel at home if they have some of their favorite things with them as they enter their new home.
Prior to moving, be sure to pack and take with you, not with your moving company, a necessities box for each child. The Items to pack in their necessities box should include anything that might cause crying if absent for too long. Pack a few of your kid’s favorite toys such as books, clothes, DVDs, etc.
You can expect the first few days in your new home to be more pleasant and relaxed if these items are present. And as a plus, these necessities should also help keep your kids busy and comfortable as you get settled in yourself.
Many children need time to get used to their new room, as it is unfamiliar to them and can quickly and easily become a symbol of anxiety from the move, which will probably lead to some sleepless nights.
To make this experience a bit easier for your kids, take the time to show them how the new room is similar to, or even better than the old room. Take the personal items you packed in the necessities box and help your child place them in the new room to encourage a sense of familiarity.
