This is a list of tips and tricks about car insurance. Some are obvious, some aren't, some are just common sense. All can help you lower your premiums.

Safe Driving

Proving yourself as a safe driver is an obvious way to get lower insurance. Somebody with no penalty points and no claims is a much lower risk than somebody who's got 3 points for speeding and a prior collision.

Good credit rating

Your credit score can, in some cases, affect the cost of your premium, especially if you opt for a monthly payment. Keeping your credit score clean will keep your premiums low.

Pay yearly

Along the same lines, choosing a monthly premium will work out more expensive in the long run. If you can afford to, pay your years premium in one fell swoop. You'd be amazed at how cheap car insurance can be if you do this.

Older cars

It's not really worth getting fully comprehensive cover on older, low value cars as a lot of insurers won't pay out. An older car is more likely to become an insurance write-off so if possible, insure third party only.

Pay a higher excess

If you select a higher voluntary excess amount, your monthly or annual premiums will be lower. But make sure you can definitely afford to pay the amount you choose!

Drive less

The more miles per year you do, the more time you spend on the road and the more likely you are to be in an accident. So make every effort to cut your mileage down as low as possible, and give the insurer an honest estimate when getting your car insurance quote.

Don't mod

Modifying your car will make it more likely to be stolen, or affect the handling, or even increase the value making it more expensive to repair. Stands to reason then, that if you don't modify, you pay less.

Hands off!

There are however, certain mods that will lower your car insurance. These are things like trackers, immobilisers and alarms - in other words, anti-theft devices.

Cheap and cheerful

If you can possibly stand it, opt for a cheaper car; but cheap doesn't necessarily mean old. An old car will most likely mean costlier repair bills, which could add up to more than the car is worth. A newer car will be more reliable and therefore cheaper to insure.
