The explorers forced the Kanaka Maoli (it was the original name of the Hawaiian nation) to change their values, and it was the start of spiritual and moral decline of the nation. In addition to that, when the explorers started pursuing ownership for the land, Kanaka Maoli nation appeared to be homeless and landless. The ancient culture was almost destroyed, but the people continued struggling for the independence. Nevertheless, since 1890 Hawaii islands were considered a colony of the USA. Another inperialist influence on the islands was the idea of arranging sugar plantations there. At that time, sugar was giving significant benefits. The first sugar plantation was established in 1835 on Kauai. Since then a lot of workers were imported from China, Japan and some other countries; this finally changed the culture and moral values of original population. After a long period of struggle for independence, Hawaii became the 50th of the United States on August 21, 1959. Since then Hawaiian economy has been moving away its dependence from leading companies of the USA and returning to traditional economical branches, such as agriculture and tourism.
Hawaiian history demonstrates the dramatic impact of imperialism on the aborigens. Imperialists simply destroyed unique culture to make their profits, and it took the islands a long time to recover from the revolution and capitalist invasion. In my opinion, in a democratic society or at least in the society that calls itself democratic the attempts of imperialists to influence some country or nation should be radically stopped. History shows us a lot of examples of lives and cultures destroyed by invasion of capitalist culture. Nowadays imperialism shows itself in economical influence, technological attacks (for example, the well-known "cold war"), informational and trading blockades. These attempts should be stopped as they are controversial to the very concept of democracy and humanity, and moreover, they are threating the existance and well-being of the mankind.
