Don't think networking is for you?

Don't think networking will work for you? Have you only been halfway listening to advice you've been given about networking to find your next job, while you still circle every single listing in the newspaper and pray you'll finally start seeing results?

In case you are skeptical of just how much networking can help you with your job hunt, here are a few examples of networking in everyday life that effectively demonstrate "the power of networking."

A few months ago I was scheduled to go into surgery with a brand new, just "released from med-school" surgeon. I obviously didn't like the idea of being the guinea pig for this operation - but didn't have any other choices since the surgery needed to be performed soon and every other surgeon in the valley was booked for the next 3 months.

Luckily, I was attending a friend's wedding a few days before my scheduled surgery and happened to meet someone who works in the office of the top surgeon in the city - and through my networking I was able to get an appointment with that surgeon 2 weeks later.

Here's another example: A few weeks ago I was thinking about replacing the carpet in my home - and started shopping around for the best rates and deals, etc. A few days ago I went to dinner with my spouse and ran into an old friend from college who happens to own a carpet outlet and I was able to save hundreds of dollars.

There are countless other examples of networking in my everyday life - like the time my dog was able to get an emergency visit to the vet because my cousin works in a veterinary office, the time I was seated within 5 minutes at the busiest restaurant in town because my friend is one of the hosts, etc.

If networking can help you with everyday situations and problems, there's no reason why it can't help you out with your job hunt!
