Darkness is simply the absence of light; let us explore the full meaning of this. For a person on the spiritual path, practising soul consciousness daily is important as it is our journey to our essence, light, pure energy, that is, the soul. Soul consciousness is like water to the desert. It reminds us of our immortality, in contrast to our present experience where we are surrounded by perishable things. So this first "light" is knowledge, our window to rediscover our true being.
Secondly, light refers to the lightness of spirit that knowledge engenders. In our awareness and journey to reawaken our soul, this knowledge allows us to appreciate and be part of this interplay of energies, detach from the temporary and develop an ease, flexibility and agile nature as we embrace eternity. When we live purely in the physical and don't take the time to explore the spiritual - or even, just to better understand ourselves and our habits, reactions, and feelings - we don't take the opportunity to experience our beauty nor feel the warmth of our inner light. It could be likened to losing one's 'spiritual breath'.
The effort however should not be to focus on removing 'body consciousness' but, rather, to awaken the soul. "I am the living light within this physical body." For example, when walking into a dark room effort is not made to push away the darkness; no! We simply switch on the light or light a candle.
There is a beautiful story of a king who was asked by one of his subjects how he was able to run his kingdom so smoothly and successfully. The king invited him to tour the kingdom. As the subject set off the king gave him a lighted candle and told him to wander as much as he wanted, but on one condition – that he should not allow the candle to go out.
At the end of the day when the subject returned the king asked what he had seen. The subject exclaimed, "Nothing!"
"Oh, but why," asked the king.
"Well, I was too busy ensuring that the candle would not blow out," replied the subject.
"Ah," said the king. "And so it is when I run my kingdom. I ensure that the light of my consciousness is not extinguished. This practice allows me to stay detached and unaffected. I see everything yet I don't. I have everything yet I am not caught up in it. Thus, I run my kingdom whilst maintaining my peace of mind and inner happiness."
This week practise remaining double light: bright light in consciousness and also easy in situations. Illuminate your kingdom with joy and light and feel your inner world light up.
Om Shanti
