FOUNDATION LAUNCHES PUBLIC HEALTH WEBSITE AIMED AT EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT OYSTERS AND VIBRIO VULNIFICUS
Tampa, Florida – The Gulf & South Atlantic Fisheries Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) recently launched a new Web site, www.BeOysterAware.com, dedicated to providing important information to the at-risk oyster consumer and the general public about the health risks that may be associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked oysters. The site educates consumers about the naturally occurring bacteria Vibrio vulnificus and the illnesses that this bacterium can cause to a small portion of the population considered at-risk.
"We've designed this new site to be a user-friendly tool that offers information to both the general oyster-consuming public and to those in the at-risk category," explains Motivatit Seafoods, Inc.'s Mike Voisin, a Trustee of the Foundation. "For that small percentage of people with underlying health conditions that place them in the at-risk category, the site outlines those medical conditions, available treatments, consumer advice and tasty oyster recipes."
"Because healthy people are not at-risk of Vibrio vulnificus infection, they can eat any oyster product, including traditional raw oysters," adds Bob Jones, President of the Foundation. "Many people are surprised to learn that even with health conditions, at-risk individuals can safely consume cooked oyster products, or reduce their risk by consuming alternative oyster products, while still enjoying all the great nutritional benefits. Since oysters are a low-calorie source of protein, zinc, vitamin B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids, they are part of a balanced diet."
www.BeOysterAware.com is part of a broad-based public health/consumer education effort aimed at reducing the number of Vibrio vulnificus illnesses resulting from the consumption of raw oysters. Created by Marcello Design, LLC of Thibodaux, Louisiana, the website will be regularly updated to disseminate information about new educational tools and resources resulting from this initiative.
The Gulf & South Atlantic Fisheries Foundation, Inc. is a regional organization dedicated to addressing the critical communication, research and conservation needs of the southeastern U.S. seafood industry.
