Online communities are very popular today. Many people who use computers heard about myspace, hi5, facebook, friendster and other terms. There are also some communities specialized in some fields, for example online community of chess players, web developers and so on.
So question is what is an online community. Here is Wikepedia definition: "A virtual community, e-community or online community is a group of people that primarily interact via communication media such as letters, telephone, email or Usenet rather than face to face".
There are many different ways how people communicate in online communities, so they can communicate via forums, private messages, blogs, internet messengers. Many communities allow people to upload photos or videos, and other users can vote on them.
Communities will become more and more popular. For example rule in thumb is that every band have their profile on myspace. Some of bands become popular thanks to myspace, because it is easy to save demo records, and upload them to myspace, and people from all around word will be able to listen them, give them opinion about their music. So, they do not need to invest big money in record, they just upload their music to myspace, and some sponsors/managers may find them, and they are in. Everyday about 300,000 people join myspace, and right now myspace have more then 100 millions of members!
So, if you wonder should you join any online community, just go forward, you do not have anything to lost. At least you can get some new friends!
