Florida Governor Charlie Crist and a grouping of Broward real estate agents and local politicians rallied on Monday in favor of lowering property taxes with a constitutional amendment.
However on Monday night, local government and school officials gathered to paint their own picture of the constraints they expect the amendment will bring -- fewer law enforcement officers, fewer city and county services, and layoffs. They spoke at the first of two forums hosted by the Broward League of Cities this week.
Crist said the amendment would signal a radical shift in the state's economy. ''The people want their taxes cut,'' said Crist, standing with supporters and reporters in a West Hollywood homeowner's front yard. ``People are trapped in their homes and afraid to move. This amendment is about freedom.''
The Florida Legislature has already forced most city and county governments to cut taxes. Broward County slashed $90 million from its budget under those cuts and expects to lose another $76 million, affecting parks, libraries and jobs, if the Jan. 29 ballot measure is approved.
