Insurance Coverage
Many insurance companies include coverage for a vehicle in transit, however, this is not true of all insurance providers, so it is important to verify your coverage. Make a quick call to your insurance agent and find out if you are covered, and if so what are the details of the coverage.
While your car is in transit it should be insured against damage and theft by the car carrier. When your are requesting quotes, ask for a copy of the car carrier’s insurance policy, and be sure to do this before you finalize any paperwork and check to see if there is any deductible.
Some care carriers will allow you to use the car space to transport your personal belongings. They do not, however, cover damage to personal items that are left in the vehicle. Most auto shippers will require you to remove all personal belongings from the vehicle before it is shipped
Proper Planning
A quality plan will help you set realistic delivery goals and expectations. The dates for pick-up and delivery are only approximate, and although some companies offer a guarantees delivery date, the service is usually quite a bit more expensive.
There are, of course, many possible factors that can cause a delay in your shipment such as mechanical breakdowns, traffic, and weather. However, the most common delays is caused by customers who share the trailer with you.
Unlike other ground carriers such as UPS and FedEx, car carriers depend on the customer’s schedule. When a customer is late for a pickup, or changes their schedule at the last minute, a delay occurs in picking up or delivering other vehicles. While getting quotes, find out what the company's standard delivery times are for the typical move for someone in your shoes. If possible, request testimonials from the company or get referrals from your friends and relatives who have transported their car in the past.
