At this level the gain is relatively low. Fortunately soft hearing aids have since been created. These soft hearing aids are intended to be comfortable and adjust better to the shape of an individual's ear. However if hearing aids are too soft, people may have difficulties getting them in their ears properly. Once they are there though, individuals can enjoy the comfort of soft hearing aids as opposed to hard ones. For people with hearing loss, hearing aids are required all day, every day. It is important to be comfortable with something that is in such close contact. Hearing aids are meant to help an individual, not to cause them pain and discomfort. Wearing soft hearing aids would make this requirement much easier. During the past decade hearing aids have progressed from rather simple linear analog amplifiers to hearing aids with sophisticated digital programmable analog circuits and digitally programmable digital circuits. The Australian Department of Health and Ageing provides eligible Australian citizens and residents with a basic hearing aid free-of-charge though recipients can pay a "top up" charge if they wish to upgrade to a hearing aid with more or better features. So much of what we do depends on the phone.

If you are considering a middle ear implant speak with your audiologist. The Envoy device faces some hurdles as it is further developed. Its battery life is an issue, as with any totally implantable device. The battery has an estimated life of 3-5 years depending on use and can be replaced by using local anesthetic. In addition, removal of a portion of the incus permanently alters the ossicular mechanism and prohibits full recovery of hearing to preimplantation baseline levels if the device fails or is in the off position. Modern ossicular reconstruction techniques may effectively restore hearing to within 10 dB. Finally, functional gain decreased by more than 3000 Hz in the phase I study of the Envoy device. This appears to have been substantially improved in preparation of phase II studies. Traditional technologies have attempted unsuccessfully to improve speech understanding by using hearing aid compatible (HAC) headsets magnetic open-air or induction coils hearing aid interconnect ear silhouettes volume controls or neck loops. After the device is programmed patients are given a personal programmer that allows them to turn the device on or off to adjust the volume and to remotely modify background noise filters. See

I was not always hearing impaired. An analogue aid may be less expensive but if turning your television up doesn't make it clearer (as in a conductive loss) then it is highly unlikely that an analogue aid will give that person the clarity needed to understand. Digital hearing aids accomplish this by transforming sounds into a series of numbers, or "digits". The computer chips inside digital hearing aids then apply math formulas to the digits and "maneuver" them into controlling sounds that digital hearing aids wearers actually experience. Using computer chip technology, the digital hearing aids can pack a great deal of functionality into a very small area. It can be dangerous - you can't hear oncoming traffic for example.
