BMW’s latest roadster, the Z4 has been hailed as a massive improvement over the Z3 in both looks and performance.

The main improvement BMW made with the Z4, is that unlike the Z3, this actually feels like a sports car, even the 2-litre manages 0-60 in 8.2 seconds. Opt for the 3-liter and you’ll get there in just under 6.

The 2.5 and 3 litre engines also have a “tuned” Si version that provides even more bang for your buck!

The Z4 stands true to its “stuck to the road” look, responding quickly to any turn of the wheel feeling both predictable and safe while doing so.

The only slight grievance with the Z4 is regarding its suspension, which can feel a little “too” stiff at times.

The 2.5-litre Si provides the best balance between power and handling, with the 3-litre resulting in more weight in the front and less response in turns.

Driving is comfortable, even more so with the optional sports seats, which feel as though they are hugging you. Sitting low, the gear stick and steering wheels are easily reachable, and all the dials and controls are clear and easy to use.

There is a good selection of standard equipment and an extensive and not too pricey list of optional extras. Some notable examples of this include “Brake Pre-tensioning”, which primes the brakes if the car senses a potential accident, and “Brake Drying”, which occasionally dries the discs by gently applying the pads.

These along with many other safety features have helped the Z4 achieve four out five stars in the NCAP crash tests.

Sadly the Z4 didn’t score so high on the eco front, with emissions relatively high, even by sports car standards. This is likely to result in higher than usual car insurance premiums and tax disc costs.

As well as providing the best balance between power and handling, the 2.5-litre and 2-litre engines will also be the most reasonable with regards to motor insurance costs.
