Stun guns have become more popular in the last few years as a self defense product weapon of choice for men and women. There are many reasons. The biggest is they are an effective tool used in self defense and even crime prevention.
Knowing how they work builds confidence in their use. Here's the down and dirty of how a stun gun works. Traditionally, a stun gun is a handheld device that has a trigger and two metal prongs at the end of the unit. You must make contact with the perp by placing the two metal prongs of the stun gun on his body and pressing the on switch.
The stun gun is operated by a power source provided usually by one or more 9 V batteries. Stun guns use high voltage and low amperage to temporarily disable an attacker for 3-10 minutes. The range of voltage is 80,000 to 975,000.
The energy stored in the gun is dumped into the attacker’s muscles causing them to do a great deal of work rapidly. This causes a disruption in the body's neurological impulses that control muscle movement overwhelming the neuromuscular system causing the victim to lose balance and become confused.
This interruption in “nerve flow” as well as the electrifying effects of the stun gun will temporarily incapacitate a potential attacker who is out to get you. In short, he is unable to produce energy for his muscles and his body is unable to function properly. It also depletes the body's system of blood sugar (energy) making the body too weak to move for approximately 3-10 minutes.
Should the attacker be touching you, the current will NOT pass to your body! Stun guns have an effectiveness rating of 86%.
The stun gun does not rely on pain for results. They will go thru about ½ inch of clothing.
I advise people to warn the would-be attacker by holding up a charging stun gun and yelling 'back off.' Sometimes the sight and sound of a charging stun gun is enough to scare off the bad guys
