While you may not know it yet, when you decide to begin a weight loss program, you're really wanting to lose fat vs. other types of weight. However, many diet programs result in muscle loss rather than fat loss.

A Common Dieting Mistake

All too often the diet plan of choice is to reduce calories considerably. Sometimes and exercise regimen is put in place but it usually consists of cardio exercises only. Though this type of program will result in a reduction in weight, most of it ends up being water and muscle instead of fat.

Sometimes a slim person will have a considerable amount of cellulite and not understand the cause. Well, sometimes a person's genes come into play and there's little that can be changed. However, usually to blame is a lack of muscle. Through a modest amount of strength training and muscle building, most of the cellulite fat could be smoothed.

It is possible to be both slim and fat at the same time. By using body fat measurements, even thin people can have a high percentage of fat compared to muscle. Although their weight is normal, they are not functioning at optimum health levels.

The Yo-Yo Diet Syndrome

A similar problem is often faced by the on again, off again dieter who loses weight by following a strict diet only to regain the pounds once the diet is over. When this cycle continues multiple times over it's referred to as yo-yo dieting. It's a damaging practice that ultimately reduces metabolism, decreases muscle mass and increases fat levels in the body. If you have found yourself in a similar position, you know how hard it is to reverse.

The Permanent Solution

Although things become more difficult once this cycle has been set into motion, there is a solution. However, it requires a change in attitude and healthy diet habits that become a permanent part of your lifestyle. There are no easy answers here.

Initially, establish a healthy eating program that focuses on good nutrition. Then, commit the time to workout and incorporate both cardio and strength training exercises into the plan. Don't worry if the scale creeps up in the beginning. If you are building some muscle it probably will. Instead, pay attention to how you feel and how your clothes fit. You should notice an increase in energy levels as well.

A good weight loss program takes into account a person's lifestyle. If your plan does not allow you to be yourself, you need to find one that does. Consistency is critical - especially when it comes to weight maintenance.
