Morocco has become one of the premier travel destinations in Africa. Millions of tourists are pouring into this enchanting country to explore the amazing history, culture, foods, and Sahara. But, are they really experiencing the real Morocco. Herded around in large tour buses, sleeping in European 5 star hotels, and eating at sanitized restaurants; they visit the "touristic Morocco."
I met a traveler the other day in Fes who told me, "We were looking to experience the real Morocco! We didn't want a large group tour, so we came to Fes. We were so glad someone recommended that we do a private tour. We have experienced the Real Morocco."
Fes, the cultural capital of Morocco, has perhaps the most authentic Medina, walled city, in North Africa. Over 9,000 small streets and alleys woven together like a maze, Fes is the perfect place to experience Morocco. The ancient city is full of traditional and culture, starting from the amazing souks (markets), the public baths, to the traditional architecture.
Most people only stay in Fes for a few nights and just scratch the surface in exploring this labyrinth of a city. However, for those who take the time to visit and explore Fes for a longer period, they fall in love with the city. One may ask, "With what do they fall in love?"
Imagine leaving your small traditional riad or house and setting off though the maze of streets to the local souk. Stalls full and overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables; the colors are vivid and seem to be something straight out of a photo magazine. You purchase your necessary goods and then head back towards your riad. On the way, you are invited to sit and enjoy a glass of mint tea with some of the friendly shop owners. Time seems to sit still as you watch the world pass by on the busy little street. In the late afternoon, you head off to the traditional baths (hammam) for a massage and wash. As you leave, you are totally relaxed and ready for a late evening meal of a delicious tajine.
But then again, most people come to Fes for a night or two; enjoying the surface and touristic face of Fes, but never enjoying the real Morocco.
