Such outrageous excessiveness is hard for us to fathom. We think about where the money could have been spent -- the $60 million the Mittal’s spent on their wedding could have bought years supply of lifesaving antiretroviral drugs for the sick or could have fed millions of needy individuals --and shudder. The rich, many of us think, just have way too much money for their own good.
But the truth is, when it comes to spending for our weddings, the only difference between the billionaires and ordinary couples is how much money they have at their disposal. As a survey conducted by a credit card company showed for example, two-thirds of American couples “spent too much for their wedding”. This implies that just like those in the uppermost tip of the earnings percentile, many of us would like to have handwritten invitations and pearl-encrusted gowns, we just can’t afford them.
