Not much of an upgrade unfortunately!

Samsung have released the upgrade to the i620 mobile phone in the form of the Samsung i640. The i640 is also known as the i640V on Vodafone’s network. The i640 is a 3.5G slider mobile phone with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Unfortunately there isn’t much upgraded on the Samsung i640 compared to the Samsung i620, apart from the fact that it increases the speed of HSDPA downloads from 1.8 Mbps on the previous model to 3.6 Mbps on the new i640.

Another down side to the i640 is that it doesn’t support WiFi, and unlike other mobile phones that it will be competing against on the market it doesn’t have touchscreen technology or integrated GPS. The 2 mega pixel camera also lets its specifications down, as it could be much better. On the upside it does have a full QWERTY keyboard, Windows Mobile 6, a 2.6” wide aspect 320 x 240 pixel displays, and microSD card expandable memory (internal memory of 141 Mb).

The Samsung i640 measures 95 x 61 x 16mm and weighs in at 126 grams. It has a battery life of 6 hours and a standby time of 15 days.

From the lack of extra features and poor camera it seems that Samsung are pitting the i640 against Blackberry handsets and other messaging devices for business use, rather than for personal use.

The i640V is now available through Vodafone, the handset is free on a £30 per month contract. The i640 is also available in several different countries.
