In exchange for your time and effort, ask for a written testimonial, stating the websites starting positions and where they were ranked after you had completed your work. Ask for a few lines about their satisfaction about the service you provided and keep it.
If you are developing your skills and are getting good results, you could ask for some financial reward your work on a freelance basis, be sure to research your local legislation before doing so though!
