Candle Accents for Elegant Outdoor Dining
The soft flickering glow of candles always creates a certain
kind of ambience in any setting especially when used outdoors.
Two ways that never fail to impress my guests are quick and
very easy to make.
1. Glowing Shot glass candles
Materials
12 (or more) small inexpensive shot glasses
12 (or more) tealight candles
4 spray cans of glass paint (1 red, 1 yellow, 1 blue and 1 green)
12 (or more) long kebab skewers
Gloves to protect your hands
To make the candles with gloved hands take a skewer and invert
(turn) the shot glass upside down on top of the skewer. Shake
the glass paint can well before use and spray the outside of
the glass. When evenly coated insert the skewer into soft soil
or sand and leave to throughly dry. Do not touch the paint.
Continue painting the rest of the glasses - 3 red, 3 yellow,
3 blue and 3 green.
When dry place a tealight candle into each shot glass. They are
now ready to use.
These candles look very elegant lined up along a wall, path or
table in the following order - red, blue, yellow green.
When the evening is over simply remove the tealight candle and
store away till the next time you want to use them
2. Decorative Flax leaf Votive Candle holders
Flaxes come in a variety of colors from greens to pink or reds.
For best results use narrow flax leaves for this project or
alternatively use the narrow fleshy leaves of iris's, or spring
bulbs such as daffodils (do not use dry grasses or leaves that
lack moisture as you run the risk of them catching alight as
the heat from the candle warms them).
Measure the flax for length against the side of the glass. Wrap
a rubber band twice around the outside of the votive glass and
insert the flax leaves under it using a dull knife to pull the
rubber band away from the glass and make it easier. When all
sides of the holder a covered with flax trim the top for an
even appearance.
Next tie a length of raffia around the outside of the votive
for a decorative finish. Before lighting your votive add a
small amount of water to the holder to prevent the melted wax
from sticking to the votive.
There are many creative ways candles can be used. Take time to
experiment with different looks and find out what is best for
your particular setting.
